Hurfesh Children's Village

The Druze Children’s Village – Hurfesh

Hamifal”’s newest Children’s Village was opened in September 1998 and is the first children’s home for the Druze population in Israel.
It was built in the village of Hurfesh in the Northern Galilee, and is in a densely Druze populated area.

“Hamifal”, the Israeli Ministry of Education and Culture, and the local Hurfesh Council conceived and financed this project. 4 family units are already functioning, with 44 children. At a later stage this Village will be able to house and care for 88 Druze children.

The Village is operated by Druze educators, therapists, and administrative staff, who integrate with “Hamifal”’s professional personnel, and learn from its vast experience. The married couples, who act as “parents” are young Druze, especially trained for this important social-educational mission. The Village preserves Druze traditions and habits in its day-to-day life.

Our aim is to provide these children with a normal healthy life- style, by providing a home feeling through a family-unit model. This model is a substitute for the biological family and enables us to relate to each child individually.
During the child’s stay, the staff helps build his self-esteem, and his ability to overcome educational, cultural and social gaps and to fulfill his potential.

The village is an integral part of the local community, and all our children attend the community’s schools.

A supportive educational and cultural program operates side by side with the formal curriculum and includes:
Extra Tutoring by professional teachers
Art Therapy, which is used to help children with verbal difficulties to express themselves.
A wide variety of Recreational Classes, which take place both on the premises and within the community.

The needs of the Village are many and include constructing and building projects, as well as educational and therapeutic programs that need to be financed by our worldwide supporters.
Constructing two new family units                                                              $ 520,000
Furniture and Equipment (for the new family units)                                      $   80,000
A major construction in order to convert one of the buildings into an Educational and Theraputic center                                                                                                      $ 200,000
Constructing a Sport Court                                                                         $ 150,000

A Board of Friends is being formed in the Druze community in order to help the Village raise funds for the children’s welfare.
If you wish to take an active part in this important project and get involved in what is being done please contact us , we would be happy to provide you with any further inf
ormation, and take you to visit the Village as well .

R’s Storey:
R. came to Hurfesh Village with two of her brothers after a year in Zipory boarding school. Despite being at the age of 8, (third grade), she couldn’t yet read and write. She was a sad and very shay girl and did not communicate with her mates. After a year of massive educational and rehabilitating work at the Village R’ can now read and write and she is fully communicating with children and staff. She expressed feelings of confidence and joy due to the devoted care she had received and said: “ I feel I am loved, I have good friends, I can stand up in front of anyone and do anything even sing! The Hurfesh Village is a home for me
