One life story among many ….

about a successful absorption of immigrants

Hamifal's dedicated supporters and friends have recently become acquainted with the organization's role in the absorption of new immigrants. During its 65 years of work, Hamifal has successfully brought about the successful absorption of many new immigrant children. Since Hamifal's establishment in 1943, its establisher, Mrs. Reha Frier z"l, has been sending here orphans - Holocaust survivors for agricultural training on Kibbutzim and agricultural settlements. Those children have been treated like children whose families have been living outside the kibbutz, and were absorbed in the Kibbutzim's children's quarters. During the fifties, Hamifal has absorbed many children from families who have immigrated from North African countries and were undergoing extreme socio-economic difficulties. During the eighties Hamifal has been integrating Ethiopian kids who have emigrated with their families from Ethiopia in the Moses' Sons operation. During the nineties, as the iron curtain went down and the wave of Russian Jews had arrived, Hamifal has managed to integrate some of its children in its frameworks.

Hamifal's success in this field has become an outcome of extensive experience, professional skills, and the work of its dedicated teams as well as thanks to its moral and financial support. There is not doubt that an out- of-home framework in general, and a family model, specifically had a tremendous impact on the absorption of immigrants, turning an intercultural process into a melting pot of children from different cultural backgrounds and internalizing Israeli values.

Bitania Mekonan – A graduate of Neve Yehuda Children's Village was chosen to present black oriented music on the MTV website

Quoted from a interview summary and published in Yediot Achronot weekend paper (Dec. 21st, 2007)
A colorful 4 page news item published in the weekend supplement paper of Yediot Achronot (Dec. 21st, 2007) recites the story of 22 year old Bitania raised at Neve Yehuda children's village in Ness Zion, her intricate life story and the long road she has taken to finally get this job.

"I was six years old when my Mom deserted us. I was busy surviving and being strong. I couldn't afford to collapse, says Bitania. Yet, only now, after having been chosen among dozens of candidates, to present this black oriented music show on MTV Israel channel, she allows herself to talk openly about the wound she's carrying all along since childhood.

Bitania and her younger sister Nitzanit have immigrated together with their father after her mother had deserted them all of a sudden. After immigration, her father had undergone a crisis and has not managed to socially and professionally integrate in the country and as a result, he became incapable of providing his daughter's most essential needs. Following a year and a half during which his daughters attended a religious school, his father searched for an out-of-home educational framework to provide for his daughters' needs…"He was looking for the right boarding school", says Bitania "until he found this wonderful children's home "Neve Yehuda" in Ness Ziona…"

"For the first time, since I was six, I could take off the burden of responsibility I felt and become a child once again. Although I used to cling to my sister and when would cry when I heard shouting around, yet, there was a team of adults who was functioning and there was a strict order of things which had totally suited me and comprised of people such as Tzipi and Yossi Gueta, my trainers who had been to me like parents which I could turn to for every tiny issue…"

When her rare potential was realized at this home, her outstanding dancing skills were constantly nurtured. Over the years her dancing skills became refined thanks to the ballet lessons she attended regularly. Her tuition was made possible thanks to the support of different philanthropic organizations. Bitania had chosen to complete national service to be able to keep on developing her dancing skills.

She chose to write her final matriculation paper on Psychology and Sociology about her life at this out-of-home framework and naturally achieved a straight A.

She gradually paved her way toward independent life, trying to close circles in her former life. Recently, having met her mother, she had found out the reason for the cut off…and as a result of their mother's return into their lives, both daughters have managed to start peel the sheds and regain their lost childhood….

When Bitania was asked where she thinks she might be in another 10 years or so, she said: "I hope that our family circles will be finally closed and that we'll be able to get to acquainted with each other better, and as a result, perhaps become more familiar with myself, happy and whole. I would like to be able to express what I've gone through in my past through dancing or poetry writing and perhaps also become a mother to children of my own. I am sure that unlike my mother, I will always be present in my children's lives
